Gretchen Kernbach

Gretchen Kernbach is an award-winning reporter for Action News Jax in Jacksonville, Florida. She joined team in June 2021.

In and out of the newsroom, she shows strong interpersonal, verbal and organizational skills such as:
-Creating great ideas and converting them into organizational realities
-Writing, editing, and proofreading engaging content across social media, television, and print platforms
-Collaborating with team members across organizations
-Exceling under high-stress and time-sensitive situations
-Completing multiple tasks/projects on hard deadlines with strong attention to detail
-Approaching situations with creative and critical thinking

She previously worked as a reporter and weekend anchor for WJHG/WECP-TV in Panama City Beach, Florida. She joined the WJHG team in June 2019 after graduating from Virginia Tech with a degree in multimedia journalism and a double minor in creative writing and pop culture.

​While at WJHG, Gretchen has reported on severe weather, including Tropical Storm Nestor, Hurricane Sally, the aftermath of Hurricane Laura in Louisiana, and continuous coverage on the aftermath of Hurricane Michael. She has also reported on local crime, community problems, local and surrounding school districts, the 2020 election, and more.

The Florida Association of Broadcast Journalists named Gretchen the 2020 Best Reporter in a small market. She also received first place in the Hard News Series/Franchise category for her story “The Evolution of Spring Break.”

​Gretchen also received a 2019 Florida Association of Broadcast Journalists award for her story on homeless students after Hurricane Michael, earning her first place in the Education category.
